The Department of Homeland Security says another agency, and not the Wisconsin Elections Commission, was the target of Russian hackers.
Federal officials say the hackers were going after a Department of Workforce Development database.
The Elections Commission was told last Friday that Wisconsin was one of 21 states that were targeted.
Commission chair Mark Thomsen says he wants to know why the false reports were made.
Commission spokesman Reid Magney says Russian hackers may have been trying to access the voter registration database and scanned the wrong one.
Thomsen says they need to make sure the state’s voter registration system is secure.
