A young farmer in the area is weighing in on a national report that shows the number of young farmers is up for only the second time in the last century.
Kelly Oudenhoven grew up on a small farm, and she’s the herd manager for the family farm where her husband grew up. It’s north of Freedom on Highway E. She believes more people want to get out of the corporate world, and have a job that gives them a sense of being.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the number of farmers between 25 and 34 grew by just over two percent over the past five years.
Oudenhoven says young farmers have an easier time getting into the business, if they have a farming background, or can get into an ownership succession plan.
