The nationwide trend to stop using plastic straws could have a positive impact for local paper companies.
Name brands like Starbucks and McDonald’s announced they’re moving away from using them because they produce a lot of waste.
Zack Leimkuehler is the director of product development at Expera Specialty Solutions in Kaukauna. He says they use the next generation mentality with each product. He says they have to make sure people like paper straws so they’ll start using them.
Spokeswoman Addie Teeters says they’re also working on new products to replace plastic bags or bottles. She says people also want something they can compost or recycle.
Teeters says when these trends become more popular they should see additional business.
