The U.S. Venture Open raised a record of more than $4.1 million yesterday, and an organizer says the appearance by retired Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was inspiring.
U.S. Venture Foundation Executive Director Greg Vandenberg says that’s what they heard from people over and over, after last night’s dinner at Van Abel’s in Hollandtown.
He says Phelps openly talked about his struggles with mental health. He says to have the most decorated Olympic swimmer of all-time do that, it shows he’s human. He says it doesn’t mean it’s a weakness, it means people need help.
Phelps was a perfect guest because a big percentage of the money they’ve handed out in grants has gone to mental health programs. He says that includes expanding access to care, especially for young children.
