Macy’s is joining other retailers in suing communities in the Fox Cities over their property taxes.
Grand Chute Town Chair Dave Schowalter says Macy’s claims the town’s property value assessment is too high. He says the company is the latest to try to take advantage of a loophole in state law that allows companies to claim that their property values should be similar to stores in more blighted areas.
Schowalter says if companies win their lawsuits, homeowners and small businesses would likely have to make up for the lost property tax revenue.
He says some state lawmakers are working on a bill to get rid of the loophole. He says Indiana passed a similar law recently, and he hopes Wisconsin can do the same.
