People in parts of Appleton won’t be hearing train whistles much longer.
Spokesman Chad Doran says the Federal Railroad Administration is finally taking action on the proposed quiet zone. He says the agency will be sending an official letter, approving the whistle ban, in early September.
The quiet zone will be along the main rail line that cuts across the city. The city made safety improvements to crossings along that line, to meet the standards for a zone.
Doran is calling it really great news, because the city has been waiting for more than a year for the agency to take action.
He says once the city gets the letter from the FRA, staffers have to officially notify Canadian National Railroad about the quiet zone. He says it will take effect 20 days after that.
Doran expects the quiet zone to be in place in late September or early October.
