Gilbert mill smokestack coming down

A longtime part of Menasha's skyline will be torn down over the weekend.

Mayor Don Merkes says they're demolishing the one-thousand foot smokestack, for the former Gilbert Paper mill. He says it will come down all at once.

The mill closed in 2001, and the city is working to redevelop a six-acre site.

Merkes says crews will take down the smokestack, around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. They're going to close Anhip Street, from around 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

He says if people want to watch, the good spots include along the Banta property near the dam, and along some of the bridges.
