Flu hospitalizations on the rise

State health officials are reporting a recent spike in the number of hospital patients with the flu.

State epidemiologist Tom Haupt says 75 percent of the more than 550 cases this year, have been reported in the last month. He says the H1N1 strain is hitting people hardest this year, and they're seeing more young, and middle-aged adults than usual.

Haupt says 22 percent of flu patients were placed in intensive care, and nine percent needed a respirator.
