DNR starting new hunter recruiting program

Starting in March, hunting groups can apply a grant from the DNR to run programs that attract and retain hunters.

The move comes several months after the agency canceled a grant to a politically connected group.

Keith Warnke is the DNR's hunting and shooting sports coordinator. He says the new grants are worth $10,000 and they have $200,000 available.

The number of hunters in the state is expected to drop in the coming years.

The DNR and some Republican lawmakers came under fire last year, when the agency awarded a $500,000 grant to a controversial group.
