Calls to gambling hotline decline

There were not as many "cries for help" from problem gamblers in the state last year.

Rose Gruber of the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling says the number of calls to their hotline was down about 500, or 3.7 percent. She says they still fielded nearly 14,000 calls, and more of them involved serious issues.

Gruber says they heard from people headed to bankruptcy, facing criminal charges, and even contemplating suicide. The average debt of callers was about $28,000.

The group is based in Green Bay.
