Poll shows larger Walker lead over Burke

A poll released yesterday by the Marquette University law school shows a close race for governor this fall, but the margin is wider than last October.

In the earlier poll, Governor Walker led Democratic challenger Mary Burke, 47 to 45 percent. The latest numbers have Walker leading 47 to 41 percent.

Poll director Charles Franklin says news of a projected budget surplus of more than $911 million came out just before the poll was conducted. He says it was almost finished before the governor's tax cut plan was unveiled.

Franklin says most voters don't know very much about Burke. She's a former Trek Bicycle executive, and she was a secretary of the state commerce department, under former Governor Doyle. He says 70 percent said they don't know her well enough to say if they approve of her.
