Long winter could impact deer herd

A part of the state that's already dealing with low deer numbers could be hit even harder by a harsh winter.

DNR big game manager Kevin Wallenfang says the snow and cold are reaching critical levels, in the northern part of the state. He says they need enough snow to melt in the next month, so deer can get to their main food sources. Otherwise, he says there could be a significant deer kill, due to starvation.

Wallenfang says deer usually store enough fat to get them through most of the winter.
