G.B. council deals early blow to Walmart

Plans for a Walmart Supercenter in downtown Green Bay were dealt an early blow, but the owner of the proposed site is waiting for a later fight.

The city council voted unanimously last night to endorse the plan commission's recommendation to rezone the land as downtown property. The vote was only preliminary, but if it holds, it would be a big roadblock for Walmart's proposed 150,000 square-foot store, on the former Larsen Cannery property.

On Broadway, Inc. owns the land, and executive director Christopher Naumann says the next big step, in the decision-making process, will be March 4, when the city council takes it up again.

The council could make a final decision on the zoning change on that day, or send the issue back to the plan commission.

No matter what happens, Naumann says Walmart could still introduce a specific site plan, with a large store, and see how the council votes on that.

Mayor Jim Schmitt and many businesses in the Broadway district are taking a strong stance against the proposed store.
