Survey: Profits, sales down in 2013

Fewer local companies saw growth last year in sales and profits.

That's one of the findings, in the annual economic outlook survey by the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce.

Larry Burkhardt of the Fox Cities Regional Partnership says 64 percent believe 2014 will be a bounce-back year. He says business owners have to be optimists, and the resurgance in manufacturing is a reason to be positive.

Forty-seven percent of companies expect to hire more workers this year, while 49 percent believe they'll keep the same number of employees.

Only 16 percent of companies are planning a capital expansion this year, and Burkhardt says that's about half as many as a year ago.
