Consumer Protection warns of utility scam

State consumer protection officials are warning people about fake utility bills that are showing up, in e-mail inboxes.

Spokesman Jerad Albracht says the e-mails claim the customer owes about $500. It includes a link that supposedly goes to that person's account.

He says the link actually goes to a website that downloads malware to the computer, or searches for financial information. Albracht says the scam is targeting people in Wisconsin.

Albracht says it appears that the e-mails are coming from overseas.
