Murder-suicide raises awareness of abuse issue

The head of a shelter for victims of domestic violence says a murder-suicide in Green Bay is an example of the significant impact that abuse is having on the community.

Police say 52-year-old Jeffrey Fish shot and killed his girlfriend, 47-year-old Linda Dickenson, at their apartment on the city's eastside. They say there was a history of violence in their 10-year relationship, but Fish was never arrested.

Karen Faulkner is the executive director of Golden House in Green Bay . She says they reach out to every victim, whenever police arrest someone in a domestic violence case. She says they talked with about 1,100 victims last year. She says they cover the resources that are available, including counseling and their shelter. She says they also focus on safety, and how to develop a plan to leave a relationship.

But Faulkner says they aren't notified, if police don't make an arrest after a domestic abuse investigation.
