Winter impact on crops uncertain

The snow is slowly melting on farm fields across northeast Wisconsin, but even when it's gone, farmers won't know what impact the winter had on the crops they planted last fall.

Zen Miller of the UW-Extension's Outagamie County office says the frost reached depths of over three feet in most plowed areas and he's not sure how much protection the deep snow gave the fields. He says extreme cold can damage crops like alfalfa and winter wheat.

He says farmers will have to wait until the growing season starts to really know the impact.
