Assembly refuses vote on RTA bill

Majority Republicans in the Assembly wouldn't take up the bill to create a Fox Cities Regional Transit Authority.

Rep. Penny Bernard Schaber of Appleton tried to force a vote yesterday, on the final day that the Assembly is scheduled to meet this year.

The proposal would allow communities to raise the sales tax, by up to a quarter-cent, to fund Valley Transit.

Bernard Schaber says it would be an important investment in public transportation. The Appleton Democrat says they had the support of mayors from around the Fox Cities, and the two Republican congressmen that represent parts of northeast Wisconsin.

The Senate approved the bill earlier this year.

Communities would have had to approve a referendum to join the RTA.
