Saputo closing N.L. cheese plant

A Canadian cheese company is going to shut down four plants, including one in New London.

The announcement by Saputo also affects a facility in Maryland, and two in Canada. About 180 people work at the four plants, and some of them will be offered a job, at a different location. Others will receive severance packages.

A Saputo spokeswoman says the decision to close the plants was a last resort. She says the facilities are aging, and it wouldn't be cost efficient to upgrade them to current standards. She says the closures will also free up some money to made upgrades at some of the plants that will keep running.

Saputo plans to close the first facility in May, and the last one in December of next year.

The company has 10 Wisconsin locations, including plants in Green Bay, Black Creek, and Fond du Lac, along with a distribution center in Appleton.
