Test scores lower for voucher students

The St. Francis Xavier school system's voucher students didn't fare too well in a statewide test.

The scores were included in a report on the statewide expansion of vouchers. Forty-nine percent of public school students in Wisconsin were proficient or advanced in math, and 37 percent reached that level in reading.

The statewide voucher student average was 33 percent in both subjects. Twenty-six percent of the St. Francis Xavier voucher students were proficient or advanced in reading and 22 percent in math.

System President Ray DuBois says not even half of their voucher students were tested.

Only 23 students took the test because the parents of five students opted out. DuBois says their voucher students scored very high in science, social studies, and language arts.
