UW prof reacts to Charter cable TV deal

It looks like Charter, and not Comcast, will be the new cable company in town.

Time Warner Cable announced a sale to Comcast in February, and now, Comcast is planning to sell off customers in northeast Wisconsin to Charter.

UW-Madison telecommunications professor Barry Orton says that's not a surprise, because Charter is already in other parts of the state. He says customer service shouldn't be much different between the three providers. He says all are ranked near the bottom of cable companies.

He says it will lead to a change for Time Warner Internet subscribers. He says they would eventually have to switch their email address to a Charter account, and they won't be happy about that.

Orton says the federal government still has to sign off on the Time Warner and Comcast deal, before the Charter change could take effect.
