Appleton 'wheel tax' debate on hold

The fate of a proposed "wheel tax" in Appleton won't be known for at least a month.

The potential $20 annual fee would be added to the state's vehicle registration fee. The revenue would offset the special assessments that property owners pay, when their streets are re-done.

Appleton's finance committee decided yesterday afternoon to wait to make a decision, until members can see all of the options for dealing with street assessments.

Ald. Kathy Plank says they're hearing from people on both sides.

The city is reviewing its special assessment policy, after homeowners on John Street started campaigning against the payments they would have to make.
