Appleton was 1st in Wis. to have bike lanes

Appleton was the first community in Wisconsin to have a dedicated bike lane on a city street.

Nick Hoffman of the History Museum at the Castle says cities talked about them in the late 1890s, and the city put one along College Avenue, in 1895. He says they were called bicycle side paths, and they were along the side of a road, much like bike lanes are today.

Appleton's first bike path stretched from the downtown to the Mason Street area. He says the former county fairgrounds were there, and the site hosted bicycle races.

The bike lane debate in Appleton will heat up again tomorrow, when the municipal services committee talks about the latest proposed locations.
