Group calls for long-term highway funding fix

A group that represents road builders is urging Congress to set aside politics, and figure out a way to pay for federal construction projects.

The Highway Trust Fund is running out of money, and the House approved a short-term fix last week. The Senate is also working on the issue.

Craig Thompson of the Wisconsin Transportation Development Association says they need to come up with a long-range strategy. He says they've supported user fees, but they're open to anything that would be sustainable.

Revenue from the federal gas tax supports the fund, and it hasn't changed in two decades. The fund might be out of money by the end of the month.
