Pilot highlights women in aviation

The only woman qualified to fly the B-29 Superfortress is talking about women in aviation, at the EAA AirVenture.

Debbie Travis King says even though she pilots other warbirds, the B-29 is her favorite. She says it's because of its historical significance in the war, as the plane that dropped the atomic bomb. She says it also has a connection to the Women Air Service Pilots.

King says she had the opportunity to meet Dora Dougherty, one of the women who flew the plane during World War II.

King says at that time, the role of women pilots was to free men up for combat. She says they had a variety of jobs, including repositioning planes, and piloting test flights.

She says men didn't want to fly the B-29 because too many of them caught fire and crashed, so one commander had women fly them, to shame the men into getting in the cockpit.
