Tornadoes caused widespread outages

Utility crews were scrambling last year at this time to restore power to tens of thousands of people in Outagamie County, after six tornadoes swept through the area.

Brian Manthey of We Energies says nearly 70,000 customers were in the dark. Wisconsin Public Service was also dealing with thousands of outages.

Manthey says there was extensive damage to power poles and lines, but crews had trouble getting to them, because of all of the downed trees and debris on streets.

It took about four days to restore power to everyone.

Damage to power poles and lines also closed the intersection of Northland Avenue and Richmond Street, in Appleton, for more than a day.
