Student-teacher ratios climb in state

Student-teacher ratios in classrooms around the state are rising.

A study by the Wisconsin Budget Project found that over a seven-year period, ratios climbed from 14.3 students per teacher, to 15.5.

Tamerine Cornelius is an analyst for the group, and she says there are fewer teachers, and the same number of students.

The study looked at a period that ended in 2012. Cornelius says only three other states saw their ratios climb at a larger rate from Wisconsin. She says the state had the biggest increase in the Midwest. Cornelius says Minnesota and Illinois actually had a slightly smaller ratio.

Over the seven years, the number of full-time teaching positions fell by seven percent.
