Scammers target Appleton couple with police call

An Appleton couple that refused to give money to a caller, became the victim of a prank emergency call to Appleton police.

Sgt. Dave Lund says the scammer apparently called police, claiming a drunk man was threatening his wife and kids, with a knife, at the intended victims' home. He says officers briefly detained the man, before they realized the call was a hoax.

Lund says they're trying to find the scammers, but that could be difficult because they are likely part of an international scam ring.

The scammer was posing as an IRS worker.

Lund says yesterday's incident is an example of why people should hang up on phone scammers, instead of confronting them.
