Wheel tax issue may come back

Talk about Appleton's new wheel tax, and special assessments, might not be over.

Ald. Jeff Jirschele says he wants to look into holding a referendum to ask voters to raise their property taxes to cover the entire cost of street reconstruction projects. The city council implemented a $20 a year wheel tax, on a 9-5 vote last night. The revenue would replace the assessments.

Jirschele says he'll bring the issue back in the future. He says he only sees the wheel tax as a temporary thing.

Jirschele says a referendum could also include funding for other projects in the city. He believes they could make the case to taxpayers that they need to do those things.
