Kaufert: Hwy. 10-441 work long overdue

Since Highway 441 opened about 25 years ago, many drivers questioned why they DOT didn't improve access west of Highway 41, near Menasha.

Rep. Dean Kaufert of Neenah says when he took office in 1991, he was told that there wasn't enough growth on the westside to warrant it.

Initially, vehicles could travel in all directions between Highways 41 and 441, but access to the west from Highway 41 North closed in 1997 because of safety problems.

The DOT is scheduled to start work on rebuilding the interchange as soon as 2014, but officials want to push that back two years because of financial issues.

Kaufert says that's not acceptable. He says he'll stress the importance of the project to Governor Walker.
