Tax cuts could lower state's tax ranking
As Republicans talk about tax cuts, the latest national rankings put Wisconsin ninth, among the places with the highest total state and local taxes.
Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance President Todd Berry says the state's spot has fluctuated over the years. He says before the recession, Wisconsin ranked 14th. After that, Berry says income growth slowed, and the state raised taxes on businesses and tobacco.
Governor Walker and Republican legislative leaders are considering cutting taxes in the upcoming budget. State revenue department projections show the state could have a surplus of nearly $350 million dollars.
