Lung Association gives Wis. mixed marks
A group is giving Wisconsin mixed marks for covering smoking cessation treatments.
The American Lung Association studied the benefits offered by Medicaid, and state employee health insurance plans, from all 50 states.
Spokeswoman Dona Wininsky says the Medicaid coverage is very good. She says the state employee health insurance plan also covers most of the treatments that the lung association recommends.
Wininsky says the state's tobacco quit line falls woefully short. She says the state only spends 73 cents per smoker for counseling through the quitline, and the CDC says that should be around $10.50.
The group looked into the issue because the health care reform law requires insurance companies to cover some treatments, but it doesn't specify to what degree.
