Group opposes raising lawmaker per diem
Assembly Republicans are talking about raising the amount of per diem money they get, and a government watchdog says it's not a good idea.
Lawmakers from outside the Madison area can get $88 dollars a day, when they come to the Capitol, to help pay for hotels, gas, and food.
Wisconsin Democracy Campaign executive director Mike McCabe says that's a generous benefit that most people don't get. He says some lawmakers abuse the per diem program, by coming to the Capitol on days when it might not be necessary.
Lawmakers haven't changed the rate in over a decade.
