State to add staff at King vets home

The state plans to add more nursing positions at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, but a union leader believes there's a bigger issue to their staffing problems.

Troy Bauch of the state employees union works at the home. He says they can't fill the vacant positions they already have, because their wages aren't competitive with the private sector.

Randy Nitschke of the state department of veterans affairs says right now, they have 13 vacant FTE nursing positions, and there are about 500 caregivers at the home. He says they believe they'll be able to fill the new positions, quickly.

Bauch contends their wages aren't competitive with the private sector, but Nitschke argues they are, when benefits are taken into consideration.

Governor Walker announced today that he plans to add 25 new full-time registered nurses, and nearly 58 certified nursing assistant jobs, through next year's budget.
