Wis. youth smoking at all-time low

State health officials say youth smoking rates are at an all-time low.

A survey shows the high school smoking rate dropped 26 percent since 2010 and middle school numbers are down by 36 percent.  Community Action for Healthy Living executive director Wendy Vander Zanden says it's great news, and she thinks the local numbers will be similar.

Statewide...the high school smoking dropped from 17.7 percent in 2010 to 13.1 in 2012.  Middle school smoking dropped from 3.9 percent to 2.5 percent.  Vander Zanden says the numbers show that talking with students about the dangers of smoking, is working.

She says higher cigarette taxes also helped young people stop smoking because it's an expensive habit to support, she says the smoking ban also helps.
