End of same-day registration could bring suits
A push to get rid of the state's same-day voter registration law could leave several state agencies open to lawsuits.
That's the feeling of Government Accountability Board Director Kevin Kennedy. He says the federal government, or other groups, might argue they aren't doing enough to register people.
Because people can register at the polls in Wisconsin, the state is exempt from a federal law that requires agencies that provide public benefits to also register voters.
Some Republican lawmakers plan to introduce a bill, to drop same-day registration. Governor Walker said last week that he wouldn't sign it, after a report showed the change would cost the state more than $5 million.
