Expert weighs in on Mayan prediction
Pop culture seized on the idea that today will mark the end of the world, largely because of a Mayan calendar that was created thousands of years ago, ends on December 21st.
While there have been doomsday predictions for years, UW-Madison folklore expert Robert Glenn Howard says the Internet really spread the word. He says while there are "doomsday preppers" out there, many are taking the prediction with a grain of salt.
Howard says when experts first brought the Mayan calendar into the modern age, during the 1960s, some thought today would actually mark the spiritual transformation of the world.
