Appleton whooping cough rates higher than Wis.
Wisconsin has the highest whooping cough rate in the
country this year, but the numbers are even worse in Appleton.
City public health officer Kurt Eggebrecht says the city's rate of 336 cases per 100,000 people is almost 3-1/2 times the statewide figure. He says it's the worst outbreak in Appleton, in about 50 years, and it happened despite 90 percent vaccination rates.
The state's whooping cough infection rate is around 93 per 100,000 people, and the CDC says that's eight times higher than the national average.
Eggebrecht says he hopes the outbreak is winding down. He says the number of new cases has dropped significantly since September.
Appleton typically sees two or three whooping cough cases in an entire year.
