Campaign spending tripled in two years
The head of a government watchdog group says spending on state elections over the last two years totaled more than $375 million.
Mike McCabe of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign says that's triple the amount spent in the previous two-year cycle. He says the Citizens United decision from the U.S. Supreme Court is the primary reason. McCabe says that allowed businesses and unions to make unlimited contributions.
Another big reason spending reached the level it did, was the unprecedented recalls in the state. But McCabe says, even when you don't count the recalls, spending doubled, from the previous two-year cycle.
