1 dead, 5 hurt in New Holstein fire
One person died and five others are in the hospital, after an apartment fire Friday morning in New Holstein.
Firefighters responded to the blaze in the four-unit building on Railroad Street, near New Holstein's downtown area, around 6:15 a.m. Authorities say flames were coming from the two-story building that used to be a bar and boarding house. Firefighters say they believe the fire started on a stove in a first-floor kitchen, and it spread to the rest of the building. New Holstein Fire Chief Dennis Meyer says five people were trapped on the second floor and firefighters used a ladder to get four of them out. He says the building is a total loss.
The woman who was killed in the blaze is 42-year-old Nicole Masucci, firefighters weren't able to reach her because of heat and flames. A man who lives in the building says Masucci was knocking on the other apartment doors, to make sure everyone got out.
