Local DA: Retain prosecutors, then add more

While a study of staffing levels in district attorneys offices in the state show they need more prosecutors to handle their current caseloads, a local DA says there's a more pressing issue.

Winnebago County DA Christian Gossett says he's concerned about retaining the experienced prosecutors he currently has. He says Governor Walker needs to include money in the next budget, for a pay progression scale. He says it would be better to have 10 experienced attorneys, rather than 19 inexperienced ones.

Gossett says it takes three-to-five years for a new prosecutor to become fully competent, and the average prosecutor only stays on the job for 5-1/2 years. He says new hires are forced to take on about 500 cases right away.

A study by the state department of administration shows Winnebago County needs nine more prosecutors to deal with the existing caseload. Outagamie needs nearly nine, and Brown County should double its staffing, from 12 to 24. Calumet should have one more.
