Anti-smoking group wants higher taxes
The leader of a Wisconsin anti-smoking group is calling for higher taxes on certain tobacco projects.
Maureen Busalacchi of SmokeFree Wisconsin says the tobacco industry is targeting children with little cigars that are candy or fruit flavored. She says those products aren't subjected to the same $2.52 cent tax that's added to a pack of cigarettes.
Her group is asking the Legislature to increase the state tax on those products. She hopes it could help reduce smoking rates in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin's cigarette tax is the 7th highest in the country, and Busalacchi says it's responsible for helping a lot of people kick the habit.
