New London man hurt in house fire

A 41-year-old New London man escaped, after waking up yesterday afternoon, and finding out that his house was on fire.

New London fire department Capt. Don Conat says the man tried to use a fire extinguisher, and he became trapped on the second floor. He called 911, and Conat says he was clinging to the outside of a second-story window frame when firefighters got there.

He says the man has some second- and third-degree burns, and smoke inhalation.

Crews were called to the home in the 500 block of W. Waupaca Street, around 2 p.m. Conant says investigators think the fire started in wall, near an electrical outlet. He says there weren't any working smoke alarms in the house.
