Appleton panel agrees to buy recycling carts

Appleton's city council could agree to buy new recycling carts for the upcoming automated collection system.

The city's municipal services committee signed off on a $1.2 million contract to buy more than 25,000 recycling bins.

Deputy public works director Nate Loper says the 96-gallon bins should meet the needs of most families.

Loper says homeowners will be charged a $3 quarterly fee for the bins, until they're paid off. That's expected to take about five years. After that, the city could discontinue the fee, or keep collecting it to cover maintenance costs.

The city council will vote on the contract next Wednesday.
