East high stormwater work clears 1st hurdle

Appleton could spend $8 million to build two large underground storage tanks, for stormwater, at East high school.

The school is going to replace its parking lot, and the city's utility committee is recommending that they put the tanks underneath it.

Public works director Paula Vandehey says it's part of a larger effort to alleviate flooding. She says members also want to spend $4 million on a dry pond, at Lions Park.

Vandehey says the Lions Park project isn't in the city's five-year plan yet. She says they would move the baseball field to a future regional park on the southside.

A dry pond is different from a traditional stormwater pond. Vandehey says it only takes on water during pretty heavy rains, and it still can be used for things like soccer fields.

The city's board of public works, and the finance committee, also have to agree to move forward with the projects.
