Farmers asked to delay manure spreading
Farmers shouldn't spread manure on their fields until the weather turns cold again.
That's the message from the DNR and the state's agriculture department.
Ag department water quality unit chief Sara Walling says the melting snow and rain that's in the forecast tonight and tomorrow creates a high risk for runoff from farm fields. She says that manure can flow into streams and rivers, causing fish kills and well contamination.
Walling says once the weather turns colder next week, farmers can go back to safely spreading manure on their fields.
