Cowles miffed at UW overpayments

A year-end report found that the UW-System overpaid nearly $33 million in benefits in 2011 and 2012, and a lawmaker from Green Bay wants a full audit of the system's human resources department.

Republican Sen. Rob Cowles says $15.4 million of the overpayments went to health insurance premiums between May of 2011 and September of 2012, and $8 million was spent for the premiums of people who were let go, and shouldn't have been receiving benefits.

The report also found the system overpaid $17.5 million in retirement contributions in 2011.

Cowles says he was told it would be difficult to get the money back, but he wants to explore ways to do that. He hopes lawmakers will approve the audit, as early as next week.
