DEA rule change could help drug disposal rate

Only two-percent of unused prescription drugs in Wisconsin are going to programs that properly dispose of them.

The DNR released that figure this week, as a way to remind people that some police departments collect the drugs, and incinerate them. That keeps them out of landfills, and the hands of people who might abuse them.

Brad Dunlap of the Lake Winnebago Area MEG Unit says the drug boxes in the Appleton, Oshkosh, Neenah, and Fond du Lac police departments collected more than 2,200 pounds of drugs last year.  But he says more people don't use the boxes because they have to make a special trip to the police department.

Dunlap says the DEA wants to allow non law-enforcement organizations to collect drugs, so people could take them to a pharmacy, instead.  He says that would require a change in state law, and participation from pharmacies
