Sickness in Appleton schools around normal
Several Wisconsin school districts are dealing with a lot of student
absences this flu season, but Appleton is not among them.
Superintendent Lee Allinger says only about eight percent of kids have missed at least one day of school, over the last couple of weeks. He says that's about normal for this time of year. Allinger says the peak came in late-November and early-December, when the rate was up to 18 percent.
Allinger says both numbers are a far cry from the H1N1 flu outbreak in 2009. He says they considered closing schools that October, because the absentee rate was in the 30 to 50 percent range.
