Domestic violence cases down in 2011

Criminal cases of domestic violence were down by 4.7 percent in 2011.

The state justice department is reporting prosecutors filed charges in more than 28,000 cases, and police made an arrest in 71 percent of domestic abuse calls.

The arrest rates were higher in four northeast Wisconsin counties, led by Winnebago, at 99 percent.

Beth Schnorr is the executive director at Harbor House in Appleton, and she says that's a testiment to the partnerships in the area between advocates, police, and prosecutors.

Outagamie County's arrest rate was 82 percent, while Calumet's was 80 percent, and Brown's was 79 percent.

The most common charge was disorderly conduct. Almost half of the victims were between 18 and 29 years old.

Schnorr says there are numerous more incidents of domestic violence that aren't reported, because victims fear for their safety.
